As our country gets ready to celebrate its independence, I think it's also a great time to reflect on the freedom that we as Christians have in Christ. What exactly is this freedom that we have? We are freed from the bondage of sin, we are also free from the Law, as well as having a freedom to love and to serve.
One way to celebrate the freedom we have in Christ is through music. Many Christian songs talk about this kind of freedom that believers have. Here are ten of those songs:
- "Freedom
Reigns" by Rita Springer
- "I
am Free" by Newsboys
- "Set
Me Free" by Casting Crowns
- "Love
Came Down" by Kari Jobe
- "Free, Amen" by We the Kingdom
- "Free as a Bird" by Rend Collective
- "Freedom"
by Zach Williams
- "A
New Hallelujah" by Michael W. Smith
- "Shout Your Freedom" by Skillet
- "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" by Chris Tomlin
1. "Freedom Reigns" by Rita Springer
Taken from the scripture, "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17), this song was written by Canadian songwriter and pastor, Michael Larson. He wrote "Freedom Reigns" in 1998.
Rita Springer included the song on her 2001 album Created to Worship. It has also been covered by other Christian music artists, such as Jason Upton, Tatiana Samaria, Kim Walker-Smith, and many others.
Freedom Lyrics
Where the spirit of the Lord is
There is freedom
If you're tired and you are thirsty
There is freedom
Freedom reigns in this place
showers of mercy and grace
Falling on every face
There is freedom ...
2. "I am Free" by Newsboys (With Peter Furler)
This fast-paced contemporary Christian song was written by Jon Egan from Desperation Band. It appeared on their 2004 album From the Rooftops. It didn't gain popularity until 2006 when the Australian Christian rock band, Newsboys covered it. The song was included on their GO album.
"I Am Free" talks about the many things that Christ can set us free from when we trust Him as our Savior. We are also free to praise Him with all of our being!
Freedom Lyrics
Through you the blind will see
Through you the mute will sing
Through you the dead will rise
Through you all hearts will praise
Through you the darkness flees
Through you my heart screams
I am free
Yes, I am free
I am free to run
I am free to dance
I am free to live for You I am free
3. "Set Me Free" by Casting Crowns
Written by Bernie Herms (husband of Natalie Grant) and Mark Hall, this song was included on Casting Crowns' second album, Lifesong in 2005. Even though much of our Christian life is devoted to spiritual warfare and fighting off demons that try to keep us bound in chains, there aren't a lot of contemporary Christian songs that sing about it so boldly.
This song is about a demon-possessed man calling out to Jesus for help. Though Christians cannot be possessed, they still battle the demons of darkness. Thankfully, the light of Jesus overcomes the darkness. (The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:5)
Freedom Lyrics
Set me free of the chains holding me
Is anybody out there hearing me?
Set me free...
Morning breaks another day
Finds me crying in the rain
All alone with my demons I am
Who is this man that comes my way?
The dark ones shriek
They scream his name
Is this the one they say will set the captives free?
Jesus, rescue me
set the captives free?
Jesus, rescue me
4. "Love Came Down" by Kari Jobe
This song was written by a team of Christian songwriters, including Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Ian McIntosh, and Jeremy Edwardson.
"Love Came Down" appeared on Kari Jobe's 2012 album Where I Find You. The song gained attention in the secular world when Angie Miller (who placed in the top 3) sang the song on the 12th season of American Idol in 2013.
Freedom Lyrics
Love came down and rescued me
Love came down and set me free
I am Yours
Lord I'm forever Yours
Mountains high or valley low
I sing out and remind my soul
I am Yours
I am forever Yours
5. "Free, Amen" by We The Kingdom
This song was written by Andrew Bergthold, Marin Cash, Franni Rae Cash, Scott Cash, and Ed Cash. All of these songwriters make up the Christian band We The Kingdom.
"Free, Amen" was included on their 2019 album Live at the Wheelhouse. This is another song inspired by the above-mentioned Bible verse 2 Corinthians 3:17
Freedom Lyrics
Here, I'm alive again
Gone is the weight of sin
OH, sweet liberty (thank You Jesus)
Praise God
Who saved my life
I'm bought with the blood of Christ
I have been redeemed
Where the Spirit of the Lord is
There is Freedom
I am free Amen (it sounds amazing)
Where the Spirit of the Lord is
There is freedom
I am free, Amen (we're free, Amen)
6. "Free as a Bird" by Rend Collective
This is another great praise song that excitedly proclaims a believer's freedom in Christ. In fact, the chorus and nearly every stanza in the song sings about freedom! "Free as a Bird" was written by Chris Llewellyn and Gareth Gilkeson in 2015. At the time the song was written, both songwriters were part of the Christian folk rock band from Northern Ireland.
The song first appeared on their album As Family We Go. The song was rereleased on the Campfire II: Simplicity album the following year.
Freedom Lyrics
No prison wall can contain us
Your beating heart makes us fearless
We are free
Free as a bird on the wind
Love cannot be tamed
You shattered every chain
Let our praises run wild and free
Your lion heart is alive in me
Let our freedom and joy begin
With You, we're dancing upon our chains
With You, we're soaring on eagle's wings
7. "Freedom" by Zach Williams
Zach Williams, along with Jonathan Smith and Jordan Frye wrote this song in 2017. It was released that year on the album Chain Breaker (Deluxe Edition). More recently, country singer Jo Dee Messina included the song on her setlist during her most recent tour.
The song was inspired by Zach Williams' personal story of being saved and set free from addiction and reckless living.
Freedom Lyrics
I felt the flames
I heard death knockin'
My hands were tied
My feet were bound
Buried alive, covered in ashes
My soul was six feet underground
Then you rolled that stone away
You pulled me from the grave
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
And I'll never be the same
I got that freedom
Freedom in my soul
I got that fire
Fire in my bones
I got that resurrection
Got that hallelujah
I got that freedom, ay
8. "A New Hallelujah" by Michael W. Smith
This song was co-written by Michael W. Smith and his wife Debbie, along with worship songwriter Paul Baloche. "A New Hallelujah" was recorded live in 2008 at Lakewood Church.
The song was included on Smith's live worship album A New Hallelujah, which was released that same year. It was written as a way to call believers all over the world to come together to praise the Lord.
Freedom Lyrics
Can you hear, there's a new song
Breaking out from the children of freedom
Every race and every nation
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
Let us sing love to the nations
Bringing hope of the grace that has freed us
Make it known and make Him famous
Sing it out, sing a new Hallelujah
9. "Shout Your Freedom" by Skillet
This song was written by Kevin Churko, Kane Churko, Korey Cooper, and John Cooper and was released on their 2022 album Dominion.
Most songs performed by Skillet are heavily influenced by rock music, but they do have Christian-themed lyrics. The song "Shout Your Freedom" is a perfect example of the band's unique sound.
Freedom Lyrics
You don't have to be afraid
Hear how loud your voice is
Shut out all the noises
You don't have to be ashamed
So never run away
They think they own you but they don't know
You're broken free, better on your own
You're on top of the world
At the top of your lungs
Come on, and shout your freedom
Victory, His word has come alive inside
New life begun
Shout it out to the world
At the top of your lungs
Come on, and shout your freedom
10. "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" by
Chris Tomlin
Most people are familiar with the hymn "Amazing Grace", written by John Newton
and published in 1779. It's pretty awesome how lyrics written so many
years ago are still so powerful today. In 2007 singer/songwriter Chris Tomlin
was asked to add lyrics to the traditional hymn (which he was reluctant to do
at first).
The project was for the movie Amazing Grace, which chronicled the life of William Wilberforce, who led the way to end slavery in Great Britain. The result of the added lyrics is a beautiful song that speaks of freedom in a very profound way. Louie Giglio also helped write some of the additional lyrics.
Tomlin included the song on his 2011 album, How Great Is Our God: The Essential Collection.
Freedom Lyrics
My chains are gone
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace
